What does the Certification look like?

The custom-designed iymcs presentation folder type certification is stylish and practical. The presentation folder outer is made of real leather with a sythentic interior that is resistant to water and protects the certificates. It is A5 in size, it can hold up to four Certificates, and is an ideal size to be kept in a crew document case or with the boat's documents.

The iymcs Certificates are printed to ISO9001:2015 standards, are dual-language and feature extensive security features to security level 3 (Government passports & national Iidentification documents are security levels 1 & 2) and can be used as a personal ID in daily situations. (Nb. It cannot be used instead of a passport/national identity card).

The iymcs Deck Engineer 80GT™ course & certification has two distinct entry levels. Firstly it leads on from the Deck Engineer 40GT ref 6.2.1. Secondly students with good basic engineering knowledge can enter directly into the course. It appeals to crew operating vessels of all types, whether it be near-coastal, offshore or oceanic.

There is a second aspect to this certification in that it can be used to work as an engine room watchkeeper on the larger vessels under 35 metres, flag state permitting.

It is an intermediate course, suitable for students or candidates that already have some knowledge and skills, as well as have had some experience of working in larger engine rooms or compartments. The Certification enables the holder to work as a deck/engineer on vessels up to 80GT as well as a supporting certification for the holders of the Master 80GT and Master 200GT certifications, whereby the flag of the vessel or/and the insurance company require that the Captain undertakes an engineering course.

The course syllabus is extensive, both in the classroom theory and practical workshop exercises. The theory depth of knowledge is at an intermediate level, the objective of which is to give the student or candidate sufficient knowledge base to be able to discuss with qualified service technicians or engineers as well as to identify issues and fault-find in the systems found on-board on the larger vessels. It will also enable the student or candidate to undertake intermediate servicing & repairs and adjustments referring to technical equipment & service manuals. Additionally recognising when to call for external support. This course also covers in-depth auxilliary equipment & systems such as; hydraulics, air conditioning, steering & electrical systems. Included within the course, is the basics aspects of health & safety, also covering other related issues including but not limited to MARPOL and deck related safe working practises (SWP). The teaching structure is interactive with the theory elements leading into the practical aspects.

This course can lead directly onto the Deck Engineer 200GT.
